The Hicks family is one of my all time favorite families and I’m utterly thrilled to share so many favorites from their spring portrait session. You may be wondering why they are one of my all time faves…and sure Heather is my cousin and I adore her, but family or not, these are good people. We’ve shared so many laughs, stories, meals, beers over the years, it’s just a joy to live in the same city as they do. All 5 of our children are close in age, and I’m nostalgic for Heather’s and my childhood each time I see them all playing together. A few weeks ago, I hauled them out to the corner of my favorite spot in Birmingham and they brought their A+ game. Their girls were up for it all, and came with a few ideas of their own. And let us now overlook the absolutely killer job Heather did with the wardrobe palette.

Their shoot has ended being a perfect example of what I’m working toward each time I shoot a family. Their connection is evident, happiness radiates, and there’s an overall mix of portraits and moments happening throughout. This is what I try and achieve with each and every family that I photograph. To walk away feeling excited to see what we got, not stressing about kids being too silly or worrying that things didn’t go perfectly. The beauty is in between those silly and imperfect moments. Have a look at my favorites from the Hicks family session and you’ll see what I mean.
